Dear Colleagues,

Increasingly, faculty are seeking to simulate or represent the "real" world more authentically to better prepare learners for future scholarship and employment. Traditional classrooms, for example, are being reimagined with both physical and digital elements, while the use of virtual, mixed, and augmented reality is creating new and exciting opportunities for enhancing teaching and learning. How might virtual and augmented reality environments replace, or at least change, our needs for physical space? What is driving this change? What is the impact?

At this semester’s technology-enhanced education event, “New Realities in Learning: Innovations in Physical and Virtual Educational Space,” which will take place on Wednesday, April 18, 12:30-4:00 p.m., we will explore the ways in which NYU faculty are engaging with the questions above. Presenters will share their innovations in virtual and physical learning spaces, as well as what motivates them to experiment with new approaches. A concluding panel discussion will focus on what we as educators are learning from these experiments, in an effort to understand their current impact and to gauge future directions.

This event is co-sponsored by the Faculty Committee on the Future of Technology-Enhanced Education, the Office of the Provost, the Center for the Advancement of Teaching, and NYU Information Technology. It will take place in the Grand Hall, on the 5th floor of the Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life (238 Thompson Street), and lunch will be provided.

We look forward to seeing you on April 18!

All best,

Clay Shirky, Vice Provost for Educational Technologies

R. Ben Maddox, Chief Instructional Technology Officer, NYU Information Technology
