The Final Cut???

This is my video. I also made a gif but it is too large to put here... I don't think that layar can handle gifs because the app crashes every time I try to test it.

Augment mostly in place
Layar doesn't seem to be capable of having a video augment, just image or 3d model. I used my cutout of the skyline and tried to overlay it on the real skyline. This is as close as I got before my phone died/my fingers froze off.

Failed Techniques
I started out trying to import what I had from Aftereffects into Unity, and put a movie texture on a plane that is the child of the image target. I discontinued this plan because my scene wouldn't build. Apparently Android does not support movie textures. I'm not sure if playing it full screen would be appropriate for AR.

I decided to try to use morph targets/blendshapes next. Maya didn't seem to let me import a 2D image into the workspace, only showing a preview in some thing called F-check. So, I used Blender, which has the option to import image as plane. I tried subdividing the plane so that I could manipulate the vertices. However, this changed nothing about how the image was actually rendered.

An attempt to melt things

I photoshopped what was basically a series of keyframes and then put them into after effects. It definitely needs polish and there are a lot more images that are going to be needed. I feel that there is probably a better way to do this other than just photoshopping every other frame, but I'm not sure what that is.

Assignment 4 - Unity and Vuforia

The universe is full of secrets. Sometimes you encounter a door. The door is locked. For some reason you're drawn to the door. You look at it more closely, and a key appears. Of course, you open the door.

I found it really difficult to think of a concept for this assignment. I think the reason is that the idea of needing a marker feels a bit unnatural. I wanted my idea to feel less artificial, so I decided to start with a door. You could find a locked door anywhere in the world. My idea is that when you look at the door using an AR app or headset, the key to the door would appear and you can unlock it, but what's behind such a door is anyone's guess.

Assignment 3 - GPS Based AR

Traditionally, China has a very rich street food culture. Many people who decide to open up a street food stand are migrants from other other provinces. As a result, street food is very important as a vehicle of cultural transmission. At a market with several different vendors, you may interact with people from all over the country and experience their distinct culinary traditions. However, as China becomes more modernized, the government has decided to start policing street food more seriously because it is in opposition to their vision for a contemporary China. The Chinese government views street food culture as dirty and antiquated, and as a result street food carts have been steadily disappearing. This project is an attempt to capture the stories of street food vendors and catalog street food culture before it disappears completely.

Assignment 2 - Printed Media Augment

Last weekend, I went to Liberty Island. Inside the statue's pedestal, there is a museum, and inside of that museum is a copy of this political cartoon. Lady Liberty plugging her nose and preparing to sanitize the 'Dregs of Europe'.

I was reminded that back in the day, people were still anti immigration, though mainly against Europeans that were coming in at the time. This is what inspired my 'intervention'. When viewing the augment, viewers will be presented with the logos of Google, which was co-founded by a Russian immigrant, Goldman Sachs, co-founded by a German immigrant, and AT&T, founded by a Scottish immigrant.

I also created a photoshopped version of the cartoon where 'dregs' has been changed to 'fruits.' I also added lighting to the photo, particularly to make it seem as if light is emitting from the torch. Because most discussion about immigration today is centered around immigrants coming from Latin America, I decided to place Zumba's logo in the torchlight since it was founded by a Colombian immigrant.

Ideally, when scanning the original image that says "Dregs of Europe" my augment would add the lighting and change the text to "Fruits of Europe". Unfortunately, Layar doesn't seem to support this very well. However, the augment works when scanning both the original political cartoon and the photoshopped version.

Assignment 1 - Recreating a Memory

I decided to recreate my memory using Unity because I'm more familiar with it than with any 3D modeling programs. I obtained all of the models for free from Unity's asset store. I first set up the streets in the scene, then the buildings, and finally the first person controller and cellphone. After placing everything in the scene, I began editing the first person controller script to allow me to trigger events such as the notification tone playing and the phone appearing. Finally, I built the game and recorded myself playing it.
