Mission
To immerse the user into a quest of solving a mystery
Goal
To create an experience to be modified and implemented at theme parks
Inspiration
The Haunted House at Disneyland
- Ride with a strong plot and opportunity for creation of peripheral characters
- “The story is meant to be self-interpreted as you go through”
- “What the story is has a tendency to change based on who’s doing the telling”
- Rashomon effect refers to real-world situations in which multiple eye-witness testimonies of an event contain conflicting information.
About the ride:
- Nobody knows the true story about the Sea Captain and the gruesome murder of his beloved wife
- Strong plot with vague character description allowing the observer to self interpret the story
The Holy Grail of Central Park
Characters:
Calvert Vaux
Famous landscape architect that designed Central Park & Prospect Park.
He had a secret
Frederick Law Olmsted
Calvert Vaux partner and co-designer of Central Park
Became even more famous than his partner
Downing Vaux
Architect and Son of Calvert Vaux
He was suspicions about his Father’s cause of death
Unsolved Mystery:
He appeared to have accidentally drowned on the Hudson river. However, close relatives are suspicious about his death.
Newspaper Headline
Vaux, who lived in Manhattan was staying at his son’s house in Brooklyn reported The New York Times
“Mr. Vaux had left in his son’s house a gold watch and chain and his vest. It is believed he had about $2 in change in his pockets.”
Quest
Calvert Vaux had a secret. He wrote a document found 70 years after his death about a secret of historical importance hidden at Central Park. The secret remains unknown.
The “Secret” document
The experience
User will unveil a story while in a quest for the Holy Grail of Central Park.
User will walk around Central Park guided by the quest of solving the mysterious case of Vaux’s hidden secret. The characters will offer the users clues or tricks depending which character is telling the story.
The user experience
User goes to Central Park
Opens the App
Walks to the experience location of choice illustrated by the navigation map:
- Experience does not have to be linear
- Each character has a “level” for the experience to be completed
- User can do as much of the experience as he or she feels like
User will “collect” overlay pieces of information in order to unveil the mystery:
- Facts about the character lives and clues to solve the mystery in the form of documents, videos and sound
By the end of the experience the user will have a self interpretation of what the secret is about.
The Technology
Mobile Experience
Develop scenes on Unity
Create trackable images positioning them at key areas in Central Park
Areas for Improvement
The lines at theme parks are long and tedious, AR overlay gives an opportunity to expand the experience beyond the main attraction.
Competitive Analysis
Augmented reality at Theme Parks using projectors
Augmented reality 4D experience
Mobile Augmented Reality
- Closest competitor, no animation
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Interactive Book
Magic Vision Band Aid commercial
Mood Board

Third Assignment
“Dream Big” + Mannequin 2 - AR Experience
This week’s AR experience is a tale as old as time. To tell the story I used Vuforia and Unity to create the AR aspect and Adobe’s Mixamo Fuse to customize the 3D models and animation. This story is based on true events that inspired the movie Mannequin 2.
Once upon a time, there was a lonely San Franciscan boy named, Joshua Delfonso. He lived in the Mission district and his job as a social worker was to help the impoverished Tenderloin neighborhood. As a first generation American, son of a Korean mom and a Filipino dad, he struggles with the cultural differences between his family and the world around him. Joshua was a talented musician and dreamed about one day finding his inspiring muse.
As Valentine’s day was approaching, he went to a grocery store and bought a box of Sweethearts. The box was interpreted as a sign sent from heaven with the saying “Dream Big.”
That night Joshua went to bed thinking about true love and looking at a solitary mannequin standing by the window in a costume store across the street.
Joshua let out a long sigh of sadness, “If only she was a real girl.” That night he had sweet dreams of true love and a Sweethearts candy box:

Second Assignment
First, I had in mind an experience to make it rain cats and dogs (I even had all these cute PNG puppies & one .obj dog)
I had the php admin ready to go and also was able to see first snow model on the exact address I set up my experience. However, after uploading the first 3d model (.obj) into Layar 3D Model Converter I started experiencing a few bugs.
First, no matter which server I would host my .obj file (now L3D), I would see something like this:
Second, after trying many different files and urls using PNGs, I started seeing this error on the location:
The error said, “Layar does not support this type of file... upgrade now.” Afterwards, I changed locations, file & url, private server (GoDaddy, Amazon, Box static link), code source on Layar and again received two different errors:
Even though I followed every step of the tutorial, searched many different alternatives online and created different web server accounts, it seems that the main problem is my Layar account is not able to find the Object ID from the PHP Admin no matter what type of server, url or file I would use:
forth
I would still like to make it rain cats & dogs and appreciate any help on the connection PHP Admin - Layar acct. Please feel free to shoot comments & concerns here.
Also, many thanks to our awesome “TA” Parth !

First Assignment
For this week's homework I was asked to create a Augmented Reality Experience using the Layar Creator App. I am fascinated by how we can bring stories to life using technology and this was a great chance to showcase the possibilities for the AR Technology.
The Jungle BooK AR Experience is a homage to the timeless story of Mowgli, the Man-cub. As part of the process to bring Mowgli to life, I’ve used The Jungle Book from Little Golden Book and additional footage from the 1967’s motion picture. This work is merely educational and will not pursuit any type of commercial endeavors.

The idea to bring the book to life is part of a childhood dream of combining reality & fantasy and the pursuit of bridging storytelling and emerging technologies.
For this week’s assignment we were asked to create a Geo Layer experience on Layar. I must say the homework wasn’t as successful as last week and caused me three days of frustration.
SmAAAsh Idea
Mission
- To create immersive experiences exploring memories, dreams & fear
- Induce the user to interact with the environment and be part of the story in order to conquer the experience
VR Fear-factor themed
Blair Witch (inspired) VR Project:
The Technology:
- Five VR sets
- Facial recognition software
- Temperature controlled room
- 5 raised flat surfaces
- 1 400 square foot room to recreate a chamber
The Experience:
Up to 5 friends are each handed a VR headset before entering into a chamber. When inside the chamber user is strapped to a torture-like bed:
While laying down tightened to the flat surface, the VR headsets play a short story about the chamber & a wicked witch. The movie starts flickering. The temperature of the room drops. The user starts feeling colder spots on their necks. An unintelligible audio plays on the VR Gear. The movie is up again. User sees this scene:
Instead of this stock photo, the scene will show the back of one of the user’s friends. The movie flickers again. For the last 30 seconds, the VR set plays a movie made of randomly disturbing deaths and glimpses of the witch’s body.
The last two seconds are a closeup of the user’s face on a dead body and the full appearance of the witch.
Conclusion:
The experience explores the fear of the supernatural and utilizes facial recognition software, HVAC, and VR to build a realistic nightmare. The first minute of the experience presents the Witch’s backstory leading to the climax of seeing your friends dying before your eyes and ultimately yourself. The goal is to simulate a horror movie where the user becomes the lead character.
