Assignment 13 - FINAL

Presentation

The final compilation video. Enjoy.

Microwave loading, turn your car into a Rolls Royce, unexpected visitors in the shower, pirates attacking Cold Spring Harbor, and running over Smurfs.

A blob replacing some faces of classmates and friends at MAGNET... Mark makes a guest appearance as well. My friend's car's wheels were stolen, so I replaced them... Emily tries to get someone to come out and play.

Assignment 12 - miniAR

miniAR consists of a bunch of small augmented reality projects rolled into one compilation video. The first part is replacing the lottery billboard near MAGNET with my own advertisement. Then the NYC skyline is decorated. The animated dots were done in Processing.
When I went to wash my hands, Silver Surfer was in the way. Then I headed to MAGNET and went into 804, where I fixed one of the Macs by installing Windows 95 on it. Much, much better now.
Then Waluigi came in to see a little video piece. DAT EXTENDED TRACKING.

How about giving yourself fake AR tattoos and taking pictures of them, texting them to friends?

Assignment 10 + 11 - Catskills/Car Stuff

This weekend, I went to Roscoe, New York. It's a small town located in the Catskill Mountain Range. I decided to do some AR up there until the rain forced me to go inside. But I still carried on...

AR could be combined with the use of a FishFinder to help fishermen catch fish and determine the best way to catch their desired specimen (trout, bass, etc.).

In Unity Pro, you can mess with the Camera Effects and AR allows you to have realtime camera effects. I tried doing a weird dashcam video on my ATV but it had some issues starting... and by the time I got her up and running, it started pouring. Lame.

I don't like iPads and Android tablets. To me, they're toys. They do the same things as your smartphone does, but they're less mobile and they run the same mobile OS as your smartphone. It's silly. So I flushed an iPad down the tubes.

I played with object tracking (and created my first 3D model! of happenings!). Except the metaio object tracker program kept crashing on me, similar to how it happened in class last week for Mark. I had to resort to image tracking.

If you want to see some pretty pictures, here you go.

New wheels + flexible paint... all thanks to AR.

On the inside, I used the Toyota logo as a marker and tried to have a mobile art show in a car. Unfortunately, there was a Dennis Oppenheim piece that refused to show up... I guess someone stole it. They need to do something about that AR security...

Assignment 9 - Green Screen

Introducing the Augmented Reality Guillotine...

The last part was done by creating a video of myself in front of a red blanket, overhanging my door. In Adobe After Effects, I used the Keylight feature to remove the red and then used masks to crop out my face. The video was exported as an .FLV file with both RGB and Alpha channels (this is important if you want to create videos with transparency for Metaio). Threw it into Metaio... marker tracking with the blood and video over neath it. The guillotine scene was done in Unity.  Programs used: Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Audacity, Firefox, Junaio, metaio, MPEG Streamclip, Open Broadcaster Software, Sony Vegas Pro, Unity 3D.

Turning cars into other vehicles. BLACK SAILS AT MIDNIGHT!

 Assignment 7 - Advertising + Midterm Proposal

Just to clarify, this exhibition does not exist and neither does the artist.

Here's an augmented reality advertisement for the Ford Fusion. The first video is the testing, the second is me trying it out on the actual car.

I will create an app that will allow the user to put rims on his car via augmented reality so that he or she can check out how their vehicle looks with different wheels without having to purchase the wheels or install them first. I hope people will use the app to help modify their vehicles as tastefully (or untastefully) as they wish. So far, I am working with Metaio Creator and Unity, but I still have to explore which is better. They both have their own issues... Metaio seems to track only when the device is very close to the wheel so getting it to detect two wheels is a challenge. Unity also has this issue but hopefully I can find a way around it.

And in action...

Another example:

Tire Rack has a similar feature on their website that allows you to select your vehicle and put on whatever wheels they have available to your car. My app isn't limited to just Tire Rack's selection. You can put the craziest rims if you'd like.

Assignment 6 - Smart Terrain

Damien Hirst and Willem De Kooning invade our favorite news program!

I tried to play with Smart Terrain. It refused to play along nicely. Lame.

Final Project Proposal

How about expanding on a previous project? Let's give the public some rims.

Assignment 5 -  Metaio + Unity 3D

Searched the Unity Asset Store for free models, found a "Unity-Chan" 3rd person model. And then I got carried away and created this monstrosity.
Remember kids, Erin Burnett loves you.

Assignment 4 - Intervention

I wanted to vandalize people's cars and trucks with Augmented Reality. The whole "Rollin' Coal" diesel fad drive people nuts with their loud exhausts, modded trucks done in poor taste, and blowing smoke everywhere. So, why not bring the fad to Long Island's lovely Huntington village?

The concept car...

Ready for production.

Assignment 3 - Vuforia & Unity

This is what you should fear. You are what you should fear.

Assignment 2 - Unseen

Little is known about the dragon that haunted MetroTech. Before it could unleash its fury amongst the lovely faculty and students of NYU Poly's IDM program, Sailor Venus arrives just in time. She whips out her metal guitar and starts shredding it. Unable to cope with her brutal riffs and solos, the dragon escapes back to... wherever dragons come from. And so once again, the day is saved... thanks to Sailor Venus!

Some more magical AR moments.

Poor Waluigi. He didn't have strength to go on.

After saving the day, Sailor V went to MAGNET to play some video games. She wasn't able to get the coffin game to work.

Assignment 1 - Memory

Now, this is a story all about how
My socket wrench got slipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I injured my hand...
