Mechanics & Movement: Announcing Our New Robotics Residents

AWE 2018 Santa Clara!! this is the big one --- volunteers needed

Hello,

I wanted to reach out to offer your students an opportunity to get involved in AWE USA 2018 in a volunteer capacity—a chance to experience the world’s largest conference and expo dedicated to XR (AR, VR, MR). This year’s event will take place May 30-June 1 in the heart of Silicon Valley (Santa Clara Convention Center), and we would love to help future tech leaders and young enthusiasts and innovators to attend.

Over three days (plus one set up day), AWE 2018 will bring together 6,000 professionals, including a mix of CEOs, CTOs, designers, developers, creative agencies, futurists, analysts, investors and top press to learn, partner and experience first-hand the most exciting industry of our times.

AWE needs capable, enthusiastic volunteers like your students to make the event run smoothly. In exchange for at least ONE half day of assistance, students will receive an AWE staff t-shirt and complimentary one-day admission to the event (excluding the workshops on Wednesday, May 30.) They will be free to explore the expo hall and attend sessions outside of their volunteer shifts. Those who want to attend both days (Thursday, May 31 and Friday, June 1) can sign up for at least one volunteer shift per day!

If you know any students who would like to assist with AWE USA 2018, please have them complete the online volunteer form. AWE will review submissions and send further information to accepted volunteers, including roles, responsibilities and hours.

If you are interested in attending the event as a regular attendee, you can purchase tickets on the AWE website.

Have volunteering or event-specific questions? Please email aweregister@gmail.com.

Thank you,
Emily Friedman and the AWE USA 2018 Team

Class 4- 27- 18 --- NYU RESEARCH EXPO

Class 4- 27- 18

For the next class, Siyuan and I have to show in the NYU Research Expo held every year by Tandon every year. It's like the science fair for Tandon and they have us represent the department every year.

Sadly the time of the Expo is at the same time as our class.

Tomorrow will be a working class.

Anyone with tech issues-- come to the research expo and sit with us and we will help you. In turn, we might ask you to help man the booth while we debug ur issues.

---------------------

Some teams are further along than others-
1st Please contact me and tell me what you are doing.
For teams that feel good about their tech- you may go off-site or work remotely.

It's Movie time!!!!@!   Start documenting your work-

THE FINAL MOVIE IS THE BIGGEST PART OF YOUR GRADE.

even if we cant use them in the final draft we can start working your shots out-

First- storyboard out your shots.

It would be great if you went to the project site of your project and began documenting your work-
in your bedroom?
the kitchen table?
the park?
go there and start videoing-
For people who are startup/industry related one approach is to tell your project's story. Often times the story is a major factor in getting investors interested in your work. I have mentioned this but some companies actually hire sick people so they can say one of their team members has the sickness they are trying to fight.

I have talked to other projects whose outcome might be more like a case study- you can document the iterations of the project and user testing. Try to highlight success and failure during the creation process.

I am open to different approaches, so talk to me if you have different ideas for a final.

WayRay’s True AR Challenge and Hackathon --- 100k in prizes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WayRay’s True AR Challenge and Hackathon is an online selection and onsite competition for developers and designers passionate about AR apps for cars. The contest is the next step for WayRay towards creating an active community of engineers, developers, and designers building AR solutions for the automotive industry. The submissions that are visually innovative, technologically impressive, and engaging for users will be shortlisted for the hackathon where you will bring your idea to a working app prototype using our True AR SDK.
Up to $100k in prizes
Fun stuff!
Cheers - ARNY

Justin Hendrix is coming to next class- He will meet with you one on one and you will show him your work. We will continue to do tech during the class time.

In his own words, "I'm Executive Director at NYC Media Lab. I connect companies seeking to advance emerging media technologies with New York City’s universities to drive entrepreneurship, R&D and innovation. Launched by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, NYU and Columbia University, NYC Media Lab is a public-private partnership encompassing the universities of NYC and corporate members such as Associated Press, Audible, Hearst, ESPN, Major League Baseball Advanced Media, Bloomberg, Weather Company, NBCUniversal, Viacom and Verizon."

"The Lab's interests range across disciplines from data science to design to engineering, and its programs include seed R&D projects with member companies as well as The Combine, an early stage accelerator program that encourages digital media startup entrepreneurship and technology commercialization on the City’s campuses."

"Previously I was Vice President, Business Development & Innovation for The Economist, where I directed prototyping and commercialization of new digital media business concepts. I completed a Bachelor of Arts from the College of William & Mary and a Master of Science in Technology Commercialization from the McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin."

"I live in Brooklyn. I tweet at @justinhendrix- opinions expressed here or there are solely my own."

the Fake News Horror Show! OPEN CALL!!

Help the world imagine the future of propaganda and misinformation.

Demo with us June 7th & 8th in Brooklyn.

New technologies are making it possible to generate new and more insidious forms of propaganda and misinformation. The only way to address the problem is to understand what is possible.

On June 7th & 8th in downtown Brooklyn, the Fake News Horror Show! will convene researchers, digital media experts and technologists, and those concerned with the political and social implications of computational propaganda to imagine the worst. Picture a science fair of terrifying propaganda tools- some real and some imagined, but all based on plausible technologies. We're looking for the best thinking on where misinformation might go in the future, as technologies evolve.
