Assignment IV : Vuforia-Unity

conception

The idea behind this assignment was to create a rough prototype that will lead me towards a concrete idea for my final project.

In this assignment, I'm defacing the Daily Mail, because they deserve it.

Assignment III : GPS AR

Conception

The intent of this assignment was to make an intervention in opposition to the unreasonable standard of beauty set by society in India. Historically, women in India have been repressed for having darker shade of skin, while fair skin is supposed to represent purity and status. Darker shade of skin is also a marker for caste.

Dusky women have been kept out of mainstream narrative since a very long time, Whether you look at historical epics or generic fare from Bollywood, it's always a fair woman who is taking the lead role and the dusky women have been relegated to supporting roles. Matrimonial ads look for women with a fair complexion; we have industries built around supplying creams that apparently make your complexion fair. I have many friends who are forced to feel ashamed for their skin complexion every single day of their lives.

Bombay is supposed to be the City of Dreams. However, that dream is only meant for women if they are well off and have a fair complexion, the rest are kept away in the shadows. As part of my intervention, I wanted to make a massive statue of a dark skinned woman - posed like O Christo Redempto - who casts a long shadow over the City of Dreams. We have kept them in the shadows for so long, we should learn to be in the other side for a while.

Assignment II : AR intervention

The New Yorker Magazine

Using Aurasmo, I made an artistic intervention for The New Yorker magazine cover. I was inspired to make this because of the powerful cover art in their magazine in the wake of the Ferguson protests and the Charleston church shooting. The nine birds here are meant to represent the nine people mowed down in Emanuel AME church by a white supremacist.

Assignment I : Recreate a memory

Epiphany

One of my more memorable experiences was this epiphany I had when I noticed a minor detail in my room. On my memory wall, there was a photo of my friend goofing around with her camera in the school computer lab 7 years ago. Beside that photo, was a printout of 'Girl with a pearl earring' by Johannes Vermeer. Though I had both of these on my wall for two years, there was a connection I had missed.

In the backdrop of my friend's photo, there was a high school senior who was on the internet looking at a late 19th - early 20th century photograph of a man looking at the Girl with a Pearl Earring. It was an experience that transcended time - tied together through Vermeer's masterpiece. The fact that I noticed this while looking into my mirror (situated right opposite to my memory wall) meant that I myself was framed and made part of this circle.

In essence, at that moment, my mirror framed three separate individuals - me, an anonymous senior from 7 years ago and a guy from the 19th century - enjoying the work of a 17th century Dutch master artist. Makes one think about shared experiences and interconnected nature of our lives.
