Final REDUX Part II: Research

For this assignment, I had to do research on what makes a relationship and how it stays together. With a combination of Reddit users who've talked about having a girlfriend and journals on attraction, I've come up with the following observations:
  • In general, having a girlfriend in the beginning is like having a best friend who has your back. While it can be taxing on the boyfriend's mind because he tends to think about his girlfriend's needs a lot, it's worth it when he can open up to her without being judged.
  • Getting into a relationship involved more of the significant other's personality than physical attraction. While attraction can get the relationship started, it takes liking the personality and the SO's quirks to maintain a lover's relationship.
  • On the short end (~3 months), romantic attraction by itself is enough to stay in the "fresh stage" of a relationship.
  • On the long end, maintaining the relationship greatly involves being able to handle conflicts in a positive way, for diminishing the importance of emerging problems and trying to downplay disagreements only made the relationship worse off.
Since the relationship seems personality based and I'll be assuming a fresh and loving relationship for the sake of the project, I can choose Sapphi to follow an anime archetype that would fit me best.

Next week will have the animations for the character Sapphi-chan that will be ready to be implemented into the Tango interface. Sitting, eating, walking, running, looking/gazing lovingly, waving, etc.

Final REDUX Part I

After talking with Mark and agreeing that the Test Wars project was too difficult, I've changed course to a new project, meaning new preparations.

The new final project will be to make an anime-style character follow me around in the real world, giving a few reactions to my comments and maybe responding back to me with audio cues. For the sake of the project, I'll make the character a virtual girlfriend (most likely Unity-chan again from below) and the documentation will be us hanging out on a quick date.

What makes this better than the other implementations: I want this project to accomplish 3 things: bring a girlfriend character into the real world, react to my presence and respond to my words, even in a very limited way. In the research I've done regarding other uses of a project like this, each example I come across doesn't accomplish all three of those things all at once.

Here Miku is brought into the real world and can react to the man's presence, but she doesn't talk to him.

Here Nene comes into the real world and can talk to you through her original game, but the static pictures taken through the game's functionality means she can't react to you in the real world.
Same for the Youtube video: the girls are placed in the real world AFTER a picture is taken with the camera. So she can't react to the player unless she leaves the real world and does so from the NDS.

Narrative: The documentation will be a date between me and the AR girl. The plan is to just do some standard ideal-date like things like eating at a dinner for lunch, going to the park near my house, (window) shopping, and going home to Netflix & Chill. I also want to make a confession of an issue I need help solving to her near the end to cap off as a romantic moment.

Some ways to pull this off: Tango can keep an eye on my position so the AR girlfriend will follow next to me, Maya provides animations, Unity can provide a UX to interact with her, like making buttons to get her to respond to you. The only problem is getting someone to provide a voice.

Final Part 1: Preparations

For this week my task was two-fold. First, create an outline of how I want the test wars to ideally play out, and use that process to make a task list in order to visualize what I'll need to do. Second is to look around for some assets that will help me in developing the system. The task list is in this word document here.

Second I went to tthe Unity Asset store to hopefully find some stuff to use for avatars. And I found an avatar and animations for it to use, but I don't know how to use them properly. Next week will be devoted to learning Unity and animating the avatars the way I want.

HW4

Unity Catalog Cube

The Chunnibyou Ad that fueled my second HW is back! Though you only get a white cube this time. Windows 10 Anniversary Update disabled my integrated webcam, so I needed to procure an old Logitech USB camera, whose hanging angle wasn't being very kind to me, in order to show the cube with even a big image.

HW3

Train Station Cabin

I wanted to put a wood cabin near the train station next to my house, something like an emergency home in the middle of a bad day.. But I would already get the message "unsupported content" no matter what I did. The app recognized everything I did since the layar test and app saw I put something there...

This is what the cabin should have looked like:

For this HW, I augmented some videos over important parts of a catalog. The writers recommend the shows they personally like that are present in the catalog, so I linked the "staff pick" to a clip or the opening/trailer of the show presented. For the collectors out there, you can see an unboxing of the product right away for an ad on a collector's box item.

Memory: Playing cards outside into the night

One of my favorite memories from my childhood was playing cards in our small backyard with my family in the dead of night.  After staying in the pool for a while, we would huddle around the table and go nuts. For assets, the objects are a combination of asset models I found online (pool, chairs, gazebo) and texture mapping on objects I made myself (door, stairs).
