Week 7
Research about air pollution
Air pollution main human causes
Fossil-Fuel Emissions; Agriculture and Animal Husbandry; Waste; Manufacturing emissions;

Six criteria pollutants
carbon monoxide, lead, ground-level ozone, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide.

Tips for individuals to reduce air pollution
1. Decrease Fossil fuel use
Transportation (Walk Bike/ Drive Smart( Avoid excessive idling of your automobile; make sure that there aren’t a lot of things in your car that will weigh it down)

2. Decrease energy uses—> Decreasing power plant emissions:
Conserve energy (Turn off cell phone, light, computers…use light bulbs and appliances.Use blanket instead of AC; un dishwashers and clothes washers only when full)

3. Decrease manufacturing emissions
Less waste (reuse things; use both sides of paper; less shopping bags)
Recycle; (Choose recycle/environmental friendly products like cleaners, gas…)

b. 3D model -- Traditional Arch in Chinatown
I want to add this arch in one of the park in Chinatown.
In the 3D converter, it looks like this:

But I cannot find the object at that place, though I can find the layer.

I guess it because of the size of the model.

2. Midterm

I want to add environmental disaster effect on real life, like below in time square.

And also, add air pollution effect in Beijing:

Week 4

1. Idea Generation — “The coming train”

I want to build an app that people can use when they are waiting for the subway. Use the phone camera targeting to the pathway where the train would come later
The user should be able to see a virtual train coming now and, more importantly, see how crowded inside and the estimated arrival time in this station.

To show how crowded it is inside the train, I plan to use the average number of people in each carriage to build a virtual scene. The number can be either gotten by either real-time video recording or sensors in the train.

2. ARkit

Build and test the app

Current problems
1. The location of the train is hard to control. In the video, if the location is not right, the train can come from everywhere. Also, the train's animating direction will be strange.
2. The size of the train varies. Sometimes too small, sometimes too large.
3. The rats are rigid. It would be better to add more animations to them.
4. No one inside the train. The original idea is to show the numbers or different degree of crowdedness inside the train. But the function is not ready yet.

(3. Former Technical fail)

The reasons may be (the mistakes I made):
1. Versions of softwares downloaded are not supported in ARkit Plugin
2. Configurations was wrong when building the app .
3. The object I created was small and it was hard to find.

Fail case:
I  imported ARkit and built the 'FocusSquare' scene.

However, when I ran it, the camera just cannot open, both in the Mac or iPhone.
And there is error in Unity (“fail to connect with player” ) when I stop running it.

Then I tried to create my model (a train and people inside) and build the app.

The app was in my phone, but when I opened it, it was all in black and nothing happened.

I guess there must be something wrong about configuration or C# codes, so I searched a lot online to fix the problem. But I still failed.

Week 3
Load UNITY scene on Vuforia MARKER

After seeing the assignment description, the first thing jumped into my mind is metro card. It is unique, representative, flat and colorful. So I made metro card as the target image to be tracked.
I found several interesting models in Unity Store and finally chose ‘dancing rabbit’. It can be a cute mascot of MTA.

Here is the result.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 2
I choose to add AR effects to the colorful pictures in a book. I bought this book introducing animals and history in Peru when I was travelling.

There are three pictures with AR effect in my homework.

The first picture is a puma. I change its face. In the animation, the puma opens its mouth and roars.
The second one is a bear. It makes funny facial expressions. Then three other bears appear and wave their hands saying hello.
The third one is about two lizards and a flying insect. The first lizard wants to catch the insect but it fails. Finally, the insect is caught by the second lizard.

The main purpose of making this is to make the book more interesting and introduce better by impressive animations.
Other applications can be advertising products relating to travel by adding a link to the animation. Then customers can view and buy things.
This technology can also be used for education. For example, children will be more likely to read the book and can learn faster, if they use what I made.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 1
1. Try an AR App
'Augment' is an app to visualize 3D models in real scenes. I tried the app from two steps.
A. Explore existing models
The app itself contains several categories such as merchandising, vehicles and characters & body...

By clicking the model, a virtual thing is added to the screen. It can be moved, scaled and adjusted in the following way.

The interest thing is to ‘play’ with the app, to see things appearing in the ‘real’ world, especially those weird ones, such as dancing skeleton, monsters.

However, when the app is used to help interior design or better arrangement for house, it is not that useful. Personally I prefer to find a picture and combine it to real life by my own imagination, which is faster and easier to use.

B. scan/ create own models
The app has the function of seeing 3D model by scanning images with its logo or some QR codes. But I cannot find any QR codes or images with ‘Augment’ on it.

Moreover the ‘Background’ functions is not working now.

I used the app as a visitor at first and did not register. But now I cannot find a place to register but to login. To upload or synchronize my own 3D models requires an account.

I am confused about what the app is really used for when trying it. Is it made for fun? Or is it made for helping people visualize things? In my own thoughts, I don’t think it is fun enough as games and is useful enough as my own mind.

2. Recreate a memory
I was spending my weekend in a tea house.
When my family and I got there, it was at night. The house is quiet and in dark, but beautiful.

The equipment inside is modern and I love the style of the decoration.

The room contains several tea tables and the tea set is simple but with high quality.
